Vertebroplasty

Introduction

Vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat vertebral compression fractures. These fractures are caused by spinal tumors, osteoporosis, or trauma. In this, a type of bone cement is injected into the fractured spinal bone. This stabilizes the spine, reduces  pain, and makes it agile. The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia and with the reference of imaging techniques to ensure accuracy.

Vertebroplasty provides almost immediate pain relief for most patients. It also prevents further collapse of the fractured vertebra. This surgery is recommended when traditional treatments like bed rest, medications, or bracing have failed. After surgery, patients are encouraged to start physical therapy to strengthen the spine and prevent fractures.

Why is it performed?

This procedure can be performed on those who have suffered compression factures because of osteoporosis or tumours. These fractures need to be operated when they are taking too long to heal.  The procedure is usually performed within few weeks to several months after the fracture.

How is it performed?

The surgeon will execute the operation under the supervision of an anesthesiologist. During vertebroplasty, you won’t experience intense, stabbing pain.

Then, a needle will be inserted into the skin by the surgeon. They will employ a form of X-ray known as fluoroscopy for maintaining accuracy. The needle is used to inject surgical cement into the bone’s damaged area. Your bones are held together by this cement.

Possible complications

Before your treatment, a medical professional will inform you the potential effects of vertebroplasty. Although they are uncommon, complications can include:

  • Infection or bleeding.
  • Thrombosis or blood clotting
  • Allergic response.
  • Harm to the nerves.
  • Cement travels throughout your body.

Recovery Period

The majority of patients report feeling less pain within 24- 48 hours following surgery. It may take up to five to six weeks before one can return to more physically demanding activities like heavy lifting or sports.
